Before you send your little one's out
for a night of Trick or Treating, warm
them (and yourself) with these delicious,
easy to make hot drinks.
Hot Chocolate
To make hot chocolate, combine 1/2 cup
of water and 2 ounces of semisweet
chocolate in a medium-size saucepan. Cook
over medium heat, stirring constantly,
until the chocolate is melted. Bring the
mixture to a boil for 2 minutes, then
reduce the heat to low. Stir in 3 cups of
whole milk and a dash of salt. Warm the
mixture for 5 to 7 minutes or until it is
heated through.
For variations, you can add a dash of
cinnamon to create Mexican hot chocolate
or a chocolate chips for a double
chocolate drink. To make mint hot
chocolate, substitute mint chocolate chips
(about 1/2 cup) for the plain chocolate
squares.
Place candy sticks in ziplock bag and
crush with a mallet. Combine crushed candy
with remaining ingredients in large bowl.
To make hot chocolate, combine 3 heaping
tsp. of mix with l cup boiling water.
6 to 8 cups apple cider
1/4 cup packed brown sugar, or to
taste
1 or 2 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks
8 or 10 whole cloves, or to taste
8 or 10 whole allspice, or to taste
Zest of 1 lemon and/or 1 orange, cut into
julienne or slices
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over
medium heat, stirring until the sugar
dissolves. Bring just to the boiling
point, then reduce the heat to low. Cover
and simmer to blend the flavors, about 10
minutes. Strain and serve. Great with
cookies after a night of
trick-or-treating! (Serves 6 to 8.)
6 English Breakfast tea bags
2 eggs
1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed
milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 quart milk
1/2 pint whipping cream
Ground nutmeg
Brew tea bags in 1 cup boiling water.
Steep for 5 minutes. Remove tea bags. Cool
tea. Add beaten eggs, condensed milk,
vanilla, salt, tea, milk and mix well.
Serve in mugs. Top each mug with whipping
cream and ground nutmeg.
Makes 8 servings.
Hot Spiced Tea and Milk
1 quart plus 2 cups water
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1 tbls. loose black tea
1 cup milk, hot
1 tbls. plus 1 tsp. sugar, or to taste
Bring water, cloves and cinnamon stick to
a boil. Remove from heat and add tea.
Cover and let steep 4 minutes or longer if
stronger tea is desired. Strain tea. Stir
in hot milk and sugar to taste.
